As a research scientist (and wedding photographer), I am very fortunate to get the opportunity to present my work at conferences abroad. On this occasion, I presented some work at a scientific meeting (Society of Neuroscience) in Washington, DC in November (2011). And during some time out, and with my camera (e.g., Canon EOS 5D and kit lens) in hand, I took a wander around the US capital to take some photos of Washington, DC. Autumn was a good time to visit. The weather was pleasant and the autumnal colours popped!
My visit also coincided with the Occupy, DC protest. Many of the protestors were occupying the downtown parks. So I visited one of them in the evening to talk with protestors and take photos. They told me about an attempted shooting at The White House. According to locals is a common occurrence. Wow!
I stayed in a hotel that was located not far from the Capitol Building. Upon arrival, someone told me not to walk two blocks down (you’ll get shot!). Wow, it was just like in the movies. However, the 7-Eleven was the nearest late-night shop. Inside, the locals seemed nice. One offered me a beer while we stood together in the queue to get served (after I asked him “are they any good!”). Though I wasn’t tempted by the corn dogs in the front cabinet.

For those interested, all the travel photos below were taken with the Canon EOS 5D digital SLR camera with the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM Lens. Small tonal and exposure adjustments were made in Adobe Camera Raw.
